[00:00:00] Speaker A: Did you know that first year nurses experience the highest turnover of any group? That reality is staggering, but it also tells us something important. You are not alone and your growth matters. Welcome to the All One Nurse Podcast, where we are bridging the gap between the stethoscope and the soul through real nursing stories and nursing conversations. Here, our mission is simple. [00:00:31] Speaker B: To get back to the human side of healthcare. [00:00:35] Speaker A: I'm your host, nurse Chanel Tompkins, and I'm also your mentor and nurse educator. And this space was created just for you to breathe, to learn, to grow, and most importantly, feel supported no matter where you are in your nursing journey. So take a deep breath and let's step into your next breakthrough. [00:01:02] Speaker B: Hey, friend. Welcome to the All One Nurse Podcast where I'm Chanel Tompkins and I just wanted to pop in with a quick Nurses Week bonus episode. Happy Nurses Week and fun Fact. Did you know how Nurses Week started? Okay, I did some research and it all started in 1953. A woman named Dorothy Sutherland, who worked for U.S. department of Health, Education and Welfare, she sent a proposal to President Eisenhower asking for a national nurse day one day and the request was denied. Fast forward 1974. The International Council of Nurses declared May 12, which is Florence Nightingale's birthday, as International Nurse Day. And then a month later, the White House finally proclaimed a US National Nurse Week. But it was only for that year. Weird, right? Now the American Nurses association got involved and the nurses advocated and lobbied and May 6 officially became National Recognition Day for Nurses. And in 19, the ANA successfully expanded it to a full week. And the final victory came in 1993, where the ANA designated May 6 through May 12 as National Nurses Week permanently. And that's why these dates never change. So Happy Nurses Week, some important dates. May 6th is National Nurses Day, May 8th is National Student Nurses Day, and every Wednesday of Nurses Week is National School Nurse Day. Just be sure to celebrate someone. But I'm here to go over four things with you very quickly. Number one, to congratulate my first year nurses on experiencing your first official Nurses Week. And whether it's your first year in or, you may have graduated in December and started in January as a new nurse. This is your first official Nurses Week. So congratulations. I'm proud of you. You made it this far. Number two, we're going to celebrate our graduates for May and August because I'm going to have many dates, many episodes before December. Three, we're going to talk about community. And four, of course, I got to leave you with some information on giveaways and discounts. Okay. And I have a one stop shop for you, so stay tuned for that. So back to my number one congratulations to you. If this your first time officially celebrating Nurses Week. Because nursing is not easy. And not only did you make it through nursing school, but you had to get through all the anxiety, all the pressure of learning as a new nurse. But if you truly think back to how you were when you first started your first nursing job or when you first started your license role, to now, even if it was three months ago, guess what? You're a better version of yourself as a nurse. So congratulations. And to my nursing graduates, especially for May and August, congratulations. I am so proud of you and I just want to celebrate you because you've made it this far. If I had to guess, a lot may have transitioned right before graduation or you're in the thick of it now and you're still showing up for you. Stay focused. Life will. Life things will happen, whether it's mentally, physically, emotionally, financially or relationally. A lot of times the hardest one is the relational part or the financial part. But just know everything that you're doing is working for your good. Whatever you're facing, just know that God is with you. Sit with the emotion, whether it's anxiety, sadness, because you may have lost a loved one, whatever it is right now, sit with that emotion so that you can see beyond the emotion and not operate from a narrow perspective. And you can keep showing up, keep studying, keep doing what you need to do to pass your exit exam. Keep doing what you need to do to prepare yourself to be successful for nclex. Right? Keep showing up and really identify what's in your control and what's not in your control and go from there and give it all to God. Say, father, this is your child coming before you. I need you in this area. And learn how to move and mourn at the same time. Because you may be mourning something, but you're also moving towards something as well. So keep moving, keep moving, get to the finish line. You're here. Just keep going. This is where community plays a big part in this. And being connected to people who do support you. Being in an environment that does, that's community conducive to your growth, because that's the goal. And what. Oh, let me backtrack. Everything that you're going through is not why me? It's why not me? Because in the struggle, in the pain, in that experience that's uncomfortable, in the discomfort, let me say that in the discomfort is building some resilience to take you into the next level of your life, the next stage, the next season to where God is calling you. And this is where community is also important because you don't want to be mishandled or misguided and you want to be accountable because you're the only one that can be accountable for you. Nobody else is accountable for you. You are accountable for you and how you respond to situations you can or cannot control. And just getting back to community, being around like minded people who want to grow professionally and personally and what does that look like? Clinging to the people that you desire to be like that are going to get you to your goal of being a excellent nurse, an experienced nurse, a safe nurse, a positive person that can make any situation a positive situation. Not operating in lack but in much having a reason to get up, to be positive, to go in and not expecting to be served, but to serve others in this role of nursing. Right? This is your open invitation to join us on Facebook on All One Nurse private group on Facebook where we're praying together, we're growing together and we're talking about like our wins, our barriers and just breaking down some things and to just process some things so that you can continue to grow as an individual. Okay? So you're welcome to join me on the All One Earth Facebook community. And I also do weekly meetups, weekly meetups on Thursday nights, 7pm Central Time every Thursday except for the last Thursday of the month. But every Thursday at 7pm Central Time except except for the last Thursday of the month we meet and we talk. We just do roundtable where we're kind of talking about some wins for the week, your barrier for the week. And then we process those things. Let's talk about it. And we put scripture on it. What does, what does the Lord say? Because we the goal is to have a strong foundation as you go about your day. And so you're welcome to join us there. Now last but not least, let's talk about some giveaways and discounts. So May 9, which is the release of this bonus episode till Midnight I Am is my All One Nurse Faith Over Fear giveaway where I'm giving away a $100 digital gift card to one lucky nurse or aspiring nurse just because I see that you keep showing up. If you're listening to this, this is proof that you're showing up. So complete the entry form that tells you what to do. Tag two people under the giveaway graphic across social media or it'll be waiting on you in the All1Earth community if you're not already there. And then subscribe to the podcast which if you're listening, go ahead and hit the subscribe button or you've already done that. And then of course the entry form which asks did you do all the other things? And allow me to choose my lucky winner and announce who the lucky winner is on May 12th. So go ahead and complete that entry. Also one stop shop for giveaways nurse.com is doing a giveaway every day I believe through May, so be sure to tap in and complete their giveaway entry form as well. And they also have a One stop shop for the list of companies and brands who do nursing who who provides nursing discounts all year long. So two different links. I've added both of them in the show notes below. And now to wrap up this bonus episode, I want to leave you with a scripture. And it comes from Psalms 138, verse 8. And it says, the Lord will perfect that which concerns me. So that means your confidence, your clinical judgment, your growth, your challenges, your transition is all in his hands. Whether you think you got some control or not, it is all in his hands. So keep showing up with a positive attitude, ready to get something done. And just know that you are not alone again. Join us in the community or situate yourself in a community that's conducive to you growing and thriving as an individual and as a nurse. And allow God to just continue to perfect you in this season. And so Happy Nurses Week to all of you. I'm cheering for you, I'm praying for you, and I'm walking with you. And we're going to do this one shift, one lesson, one God moment at a time. Now until next time, let your light shine.
